HHELP Services 25th anniversary

Hhelp Darling Downs Inc. originated as a self-help group in 1976 with a view of supporting and encouraging people with a disability to become more involved in the Toowoomba community. Today Hhelp is a non-government, community based, charitable organisation providing a range of services to around 190 people within the Toowoomba community.

A dinner to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Hhelp Darling Downs Inc was held on Saturday, November 25th, 2006 at the Middle Ridge Golf Club.

In attendance was the Hon. Kerry Shine, Attorney General and Member for Toowoomba North, several Toowoomba City Councillors, representatives from Disability Services Queensland, other community organisations and many people who were involved with the inception of Hhelp. There were also many of the current and past staff members of Hhelp along with current and past clients and their families.

Entertainment was provided by clients of Hhelp.

Our guest speaker for the evening was Sam Bailey - a farmer, pilot, inspirational speaker and an author. He is also a C6/C7 quadriplegic following a car accident in 1987 while jackarooing in the Northern Territory. Sam was only 19 years of age.

A book titled "An Inch is as Good as a Mile - A Short History Long in the Making" was also launched to celebrate the 25 years of Hhelp.

A number of people in attendance on the evening commented on the ambience of the venue, and the preparation that had gone into bringing the event to fruition. At the end of the evening a toast was made by a parent attending the celebrations, asking the people present to charge their glasses and join him in congratulating Hhelp for the excellent work that it did within the community.

Hhelp Sports Day 2005

Hhelp Sports Day 2005

Our annual Sports Day was held this year on October 10th, at St Mary's oval - St Mary's High School was kind enough to donate the use of their oval and some sport equipment. To allow for catering and prizes a "Cadbury" fundraiser was held in the weeks leading up to the sports day. We would like to thank everyone who helped sell chocolates - and everyone who ate them.

Approximately 35 participants attended the day and were split into groups. Team members of each group decided on a name for their group. There were four teams and the names of the teams were the "Champions", "Falcons", "Gorillas" and "Ace of Spades".

We started the games off with athe egg and spoon relay followed by "Captain", "Leader" and then "Tunnel Ball". We had a short break for morning tea - fresh oranges had been cut up for the day. Everyone seemed to enjoy them as it was quite a hot day. After morning tea it was a battle of strength between the teams. One by one each team competed against each other in a game of "Tug of War". The "Falcons" were too strong and came away with the prize.

A barbecue lunch was provided after the "Tug of War" competition and some took the opportunity to rest for a while in the shade, chatting and having fun. Others engaged in a spontaneous game of touch football during the lunch break and was enjoyed by those who participated - and those spectators who cheered from the sidelines.

After lunch the day continued with a game of "Apple Bobbing" in which participants were required to use their mouths to remove an apple from a bucket of water. This game was greatly enjoyed by all those that participated in the game, and provided many laughs for both participants and those watching.

After drying our faces everyone joined in a game of "Pass the Footy" - this is a game where participants are required to throw a football through a hole in a board. This may sound easy but proved to be quite difficult for those playing the game, although everyone playing had a lot of fun trying to get the ball through the hole. At the end of the day a presentation was held. Everyone who attended the Sport Day received a medallion.

Hhelp would like to thank everyone who came along. A memorable and exciting day was had by all, both staff and clients. Thank you to all those who helped in organising the activities, and making it such a special day.
